Christ Church Newsletter - Week of August 14th, 2016

A Search Milestone
After many months of research, data gathering and deliberation our Parish Profile has been completed and approved by the vestry. It describes our people, our place, our history and our aspirations. Once it has been reviewed and approved by the Bishop, we will be able to post it where clergy looking for a new calling can read it. We will also post it to our web site at that time. This brings us one giant step closer to calling our next Rector. We owe our search committee a large debt of gratitude for their work.

… and speaking of web sites…
Check out the revamped CCLA.us web site. It has a live calendar of everything going on at Christ Church and should be much easier to keep it up to date. For example, scroll down on the home page and you will find a link allowing you to sign up to have your portrait taken for our new photo directory.

Another interesting page is the Christ Church entry on Trip Advisor. Maybe if they come for the windows, they’ll stay to worship? I’ll try anything.

Photo Directory
When we call our new Rector we will expect them to know all of our names within the first week. OK, that’s unrealistic, but let’s give them a fighting chance: have your portrait taken for a new photo directory which can be waiting on the Rector’s desk upon arrival. We are scheduled to have our pictures taken by LifeTouch on Sunday, Sept. 25th and the following Monday. Click on the picture on the left (or here) to schedule your appointment. If you can’t make it on one of those days, call 800-521-4611 to find out where they will be on other days and get your picture taken there. It is important that we get everybody into this directory. You can’t have Sunday at 12:30; Marie and I already grabbed that slot.

One More Picnic
Last Wednesday’s picnic saw 42 of us milling around with the usual hamburgers, salads, drinks, etc. It goes without saying that a good time was had by all, so I won’t say it.

Our last blast of Summer 2016 will be on Wed. August 31, with a Final BBQ on the Lower Lawn from 5:30 to 7:30. As a Parish, we invite our school friends and Los Altos neighbors to this effortless evening as we go into Fall at CCLA. Please join us for our fantastic salads, great burgers, good conversation, and lots of fun for the kids on the climbing structure! Grillers and extra salads always welcome, just email Lauren at laurenarnold@cs.com to contribute. See you there!

Shires Library
We are now finished with the repurposing of the Shires Library to a wonderful children’s library. Ventana School is thrilled with the new library! The Shires Library now contains 5500+ children's books organized into kid-friendly topics like ABCs, Space, and Things that Go; a computer and bar code reader for checking books in and out that even the youngest kids can navigate; tables and chairs for group work; and a cozy pillow corner for serious reading. This Sunday, Aug. 21st, we will have an open house to show off all the fabulous changes.  Jenny Warila, the Ventana Librarian will be available after church to give answer any questions.

Eagle Scout Projects
The BSA Eagle Project is done.  It was the West Hillside with new terracing and ground cover.  James Doherty was the Life Scout who did the work.  Will be inviting the two scouts in the very near future to our Sunday service so we can thank them.

Christ Church Newsletter - Week of August 7th, 2016

Meteor Shower tonight!
We’ve all heard of Halley’s Comet which swings around the sun every 76 years (next appearance in 2061,) but have you heard of comet Swift-Tuttle? It comes around every 133 years and is a real litterbug! It passes close to the orbital path of the Earth and sheds thousands of pieces of ice Tonight and tomorrow night we will pass through this debris cloud, and as each piece hits the atmosphere it burns up with a flash of light. Since these tracks seem to come from the region of the constellation Perseus, it has been dubbed the Perseid Meteor Shower. Best viewing is starting at midnight Friday morning. Enjoy!

Charlie Lomax
Our old friend Charlie Lomax died this week, just a few days after the death of his son Randy. We will gather to remember Charlie Saturday, August 20th at 2 PM.

Last of the Summer Picnics
Our popular summer picnics will resume on Wed. August 17 and on Wed. August 31. These are new dates (no picnic August 24, sorry!) but the results will be the same -- two more fun summer evenings with good food and great fellowship on the Lower Lawn. Join us from 5:30 to 7. Extra volunteers for salads or grillmeisters always welcome, just email Lauren at laurenarnold@cs.com

CSA Food Drive
Christ Church has always been vet generous in providing food for distribution by the Community Services Agency. Even in summer people need to eat. Keep up the good work.

Peninsula Harmony Chorus
… will be presenting their program harmonizing rhythms on Saturday, September 24th at 7:30 PM in the Parish Hall. For further information, see their web site or call (408) 655-8182.
